Not All Heroes Wear Capes

On National Superhero Day, we celebrate our team members who go above and beyond each day to live out our Purpose — Improving lives one relationship at at time — by creating exceptional experiences for our guests and team members. Below are the stories from just a few of the many “superheroes” at Mattress Firm!


Anthony N., Outbound Specialist
Houston, Texas

The thing about selling mattresses is that you directly affect people’s lives every single day. I recently helped a guest with a warranty claim that she couldn’t get done in a store. I let her know I could get her the exact same mattress for the same price, she would just need to pay for delivery. She was happy, but mentioned that she couldn’t afford delivery at the moment. She went on to explain that her husband had unexpectedly passed away a little over a month ago and he was the sole income of the household.

I decided to do what was right. I told her I’d waive her delivery fee and have this delivered to her in two days. She immediately cried on the phone and continued to thank me for my kind gesture. She eventually mentioned their children — she let me know they were 3, 5, 12 and 14. I couldn’t imagine how it must’ve felt being in her shoes. So I told her, “When your kids get older and need a new mattress, you come to me and I’ll help you to the best of my ability. I don’t want you to ever feel like Mattress Firm can’t help you.” She again thanked me profusely.

It’s situations like this where Mattress Firm’s Purpose “Improving lives one relationship at a time” comes into play. And it’s moments like these why I love my job and my company.

I received a call from a gentleman from a foster care agency in late February around 6pm. It was an emergency situation:  two children were being placed in a nearby city and were without beds. The agency was low on funding and was trying to figure out how to get these kids a bed. They had checked around town and asked if there was any way we could help them with a few mattresses.

After a quick call to Tammy D. (Communications Manager) and some after-hours paperwork on her part, we were able to get two new Tulo mattresses with platform frames approved within the hour. Improving lives one relationship at a time — it’s what we do and what we should all strive to be known for.

Quincy, Illinois

In 2012, I was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease called Relapsing Polychondritis. The treatments to keep me alive and functioning caused great havoc to my health and body. I live with what so many people live with, a chronic invisible illness, though it goes by different names. When I was given the opportunity to join the Mattress Firm family, I had just been diagnosed with Avascular Necrosis in my hips, which caused them to eventually collapse and fracture.

Living with daily pain and searching constantly for natural ways to heal and lessen that pain was a way for me to reach out to locals within our community dealing with the same types of issues and offer them another form of support. It was a teaching moment, educating people about what better sleep and the right comfort can do for them.

I never wanted to be in sales. However, this job was presented to me as a way to help people and I have witnessed this in my day-to-day life here at Mattress Firm. I have gotten to know so many people, learned their stories, and connected with them. From people with severe Fibromyalgia finding the right bed that is perfect for their very specific needs, to people recovering from surgeries and getting the same adjustable base that helped me heal “miraculously” (as my surgeon called it) from my hip replacements.

Mattress Firm may be a business, but in educating their employees, they are advocates for sleep, advocates for pain relief, and advocates for people bettering their lives. I am honored to be a part of it.

Harwich, Massachusetts

I recently helped a guest in our Harwich showroom who had suffered a severe concussion. The music in the showroom was affecting her, so I accommodated her by shutting off the music, showing her compassion, and was very patient when working with her. The end result was amazing, as she got her dream bed. I was deeply touched and happy to have made a guest’s quality of life improve in some way.
